thanksgiving day: dessert

thanksgiving always means lots of cooking and timing when it comes to the yummy food. my favorite part (aside from yams with marshmallows and brown sugar) is dessert. however, and don't hate me for saying this, i do not like pumpkin pie. i know, i know, it's a classic turkey day staple but, i've never really loved it. so for my thanksgiving (and friendsgiving) contributions, i decided i would spice up the dessert display with chocolate cake with salted caramel icing, caramel apple cheesecake and molasses cookies dipped in vanilla almond bark.

needless to say, i am in for a baking frenzy tonight. and as much as i would like to just hang tonight, i have learned from experience to try to get everything done in advance (mostly because something always goes wrong and i need the extra time to fix fill-in-the-blank). :)

wish me luck that it all goes smoothly and i didn't forget a critical ingredient in the middle of the night..eek! T could easily tell you this is my calling card with nearly every recipe i make. ;)

vintage finds: black and white

can you be too stripe-y? after finding this comfy, cozy sweater last week, i felt like the perfect thing to wear it with was a lost striped skirt tucked deep in my closet. you know, so far back that you've forgotten it was there and it's like you've re-bought it all over again? (which while i'm thinking about it, i really need to go through my closet again) i can't be the only one who does that right? ;)

i loved the stripes but felt like it needed something that pulled the whole look together. so, i added a thin green-blue belt and simple leopard flats. which, for the record, i'm not the world's biggest fan of animal prints but, these flats are the perfect amount without being too wild (it's a very fine line in my book).

happy almost turkey day! (can't wait!)

movies

this seems to be that time of year where nearly everyone is getting sick! the suddenly cooler weather, while welcomed, is a new adjustment for your body so it typically means, no matter how you fight it...you get sick at some point. grr! and like anyone i know, i hate being sick. honestly, if i met anyone who liked it, i could not possibly imagine the array of facial expressions i would have. ;)

BUT, that's besides the point. to get me through it, i stick to these three things to help make me feel a little less ick. first, i make a sick-kid couch (i know, i need a better name) - for whatever reason, i have never liked being in bed when sick. love sleeping there, just, not lounging around there when sick. (it makes sense to me at least) second, snacks - i always have a hardtime finding things i want to eat when i don't feel well. so, i stick to snacky foods like fruit, cheese, crackers and soup. the last wasn't a snack i know, but has always been a snack-like food to me. and third, movies...i really am not much for watching bad tv when i'm sick and, as far as movies go, i try to stick to three genres: adventure (terminator and the avengers), traditional childhood favorites (hocus pocus and the addams family) and, chick flicks (ever after and love actually).

that plus water and sleep make me feel right as rain in no time! so, what are your go-tos when feeling under the weather??
